Learning Disability
What is a learning disability? The World Health Organisation defines learning disabilities as 'a state of arrested or incomplete development of mind'. Somebody with a learning disability is said also to have 'significant impairment of intellectual functioning' and 'significant impairment of adaptive/social functioning' This means that the person will have difficulties understanding, learning and remembering new things, and in generalising any learning to new situations. Because of these difficulties with learning, the person may have difficulties with a number of social tasks, for example communication, self-care, awareness of health and safety. A final dimension to the definition is that these impairments are present from childhood, not acquired as a result of accident or following the onset of adult illness. Learning disability usually only affects certain areas of development, rarely are learning disabilities severe enough to prevent a person living a happy and normal life. This can effect a persons life a lot or very little. One thing is sure and that is our understanding, reaction and response to the person with learning difficulties, drastically effects that person. Being patient, trying to understand and treating the person with respect greatly reduces their frustration and anxiety, helps them relax, feel less tense but most of all gives them time to think without pressure or fear of failure. Learning Disabilities tend to stay for life. Remedial teaching teaches children 'coping skills' so that the child is able to function despite the learning disabilities. As a learning-disabled child grows, he becomes more aware of his shortcomings and this causes frustration. Added to this is the fact that as children grow, they become less accepting. They look to form groups with children who have the same abilities and themselves. They become more aware of 'differences'.
